2 HP SEW Electric Capstan Winch – 18 RPM Warping Head, 3 Phase
This is an imported electric capstan winch with a cast warping head (capstan drum) driven by an SEW right-angle geared drive. The 2 HP (1.5 kW) motor and gear reduction turn the capstan at 18 RPM, a slow, steady speed for controlled rope pulling. It is supplied by Standard Machinery in Imported, Refurbished & Tested condition.
A capstan works differently from a drum winch. The rope is wrapped a few turns around the warping head and the operator holds (tails) the free end. Pulling the tail grips the rope and moves the load, and easing off lets the rope slip. The rope is not stored on the capstan, so there is no limit on rope length, and the pull can be controlled smoothly by hand.

Voltage & Power Note
The capstan runs on a 3 phase, 380–440 V, 50/60 Hz supply with a 2 HP (1.5 kW) motor, which suits standard Indian industrial power (415 V, 50 Hz). Use a forward/reverse starter with overload relay and an emergency stop, with the stop button within easy reach of the operator. Share your site supply details with us and we will match them before dispatch.
Safety Note
Before use, the capstan's line pull / safe working load (SWL), drive and mounting must be inspected and load-tested by a competent person as per local regulations.
- A capstan is a pulling device, not a lifting device. Do not use it to lift or hold suspended loads, and never for man-riding
- Never stand in the bight of the rope or in line with a rope under tension
- Keep hands and gloves clear of the point where the rope comes onto the warping head
- Use rope of a suitable type and size, and inspect it before every use
- Bolt the base to a rigid deck, foundation or structure capable of taking the full pull
- Not certified for explosive or flammable atmospheres
Maintenance Tips
- Check gearbox oil level and change oil at the intervals given for the gear unit
- Keep the warping head surface clean and free of grooves or burrs that can damage rope
- Check foundation bolts and base bracket for tightness after initial use
- Keep the motor terminal box and cable gland sealed against water and dust
- In marine or coastal use, wash off salt deposits and touch up paint to prevent corrosion
- Check motor current and listen for unusual gear noise during routine checks
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a capstan winch and how is it different from a drum winch?
A capstan uses a few turns of rope around a rotating warping head, with the operator holding the free end. It does not store rope, so rope length is unlimited and the pull is controlled by hand tension. A drum winch winds and stores the rope on its drum.
What is the speed and power of this capstan?
It has a 2 HP (1.5 kW) motor driving an SEW right-angle gearbox, with a capstan output speed of 18 RPM.
What power supply does it need?
It needs a 3 phase, 380–440 V, 50/60 Hz supply, which covers standard Indian 415 V, 50 Hz industrial power.
Can this capstan be used for lifting?
No. A capstan is designed for horizontal pulling, warping and hauling. It should not be used to lift or hold suspended loads or persons.
Is this suitable for boats and mooring?
Yes, capstans are widely used for warping and mooring lines. For deck or open-air use, protect the motor and gearbox from water and salt spray and keep the unit painted.
Do you export?
Yes. Standard Machinery supplies across India and exports to Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Contact us for export packing and shipping details.
